This article was a report that CBS had done. It stated that Rep. Edward Markey has been looking at amusement parks and seeking federal oversight. He proposed the national amusement park ride safety act. In result, this act would give the ferderal comsumer product safety commission jurisdiction over amusement park industries. There is a man fighting this act named Bill Powers. CBS interviewed him. One question they asked Powers was, what kinds of injuries are we talking about here? Bill was outraged, he simply believes that amusement parks and their rides are not dangerous. He stated that there are very few injuries concerning them. Powers says that there are many other things much more dangerous. For example, all different sports like basketball, soccer and play ground accidents. The strongly sided man said that there are 200,00o emergency room calls concerning soccer, 600,000 concerning basketball and 80,00 from playgrounds in one year. "Last year 12 people died being electrocuted by toaster ovens but there was only one fatality on a ride at an amusement park." Bill completely tore apart the fact that people think that amusement parks aren't safe, and really nailed Rep. Markey. He made many different accusations (like the one above) and practically laughed at him. Powers obviously believes that Congress is wasting their time on amusement parks. And that's where he really hit the Rep. hard, because he pointed out at least 10 other things more dangerous than amusement parks right here in this CBS special report. That is the main part of the article I read, but all of it was fantastic. If you'd like to view it now, click here.
